Your child may be able to read a book comfortably but need a seat closer to the classroom board to see it clearly. That difference can be a sign of myopia, or nearsightedness. At our Farmers Branch office, we help families understand how their child’s vision is changing and whether myopia management could help slow those changes.
Standard glasses bring distant objects into focus. If your child needs stronger lenses at each exam, we can also discuss treatment to slow the progression of nearsightedness. This is especially worth discussing when myopia starts at a young age, because a child’s eyes still have several years of growth ahead. Higher levels of myopia are linked to a greater risk of eye conditions such as retinal detachment later in life.
We check how clearly your child sees at a distance, measure their prescription, and examine their eye health. If you have previous prescriptions, bring them along. Comparing them helps us see how quickly your child’s vision has changed.
We also ask about school, sports, and daily routines. Whether your child feels ready to handle contact lenses or would prefer to keep wearing glasses can help us narrow down the options together.
MiSight 1 day contact lenses. These daily disposable lenses correct distance vision and can slow myopia progression. They are FDA-approved for children who start treatment between ages 8 and 12 and meet specific prescription criteria.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K). Your child wears custom lenses overnight and removes them in the morning. The lenses temporarily reshape the front of the eye, which can reduce the need for daytime glasses. They may also help slow myopia progression.
Low-dose atropine eye drops. We may prescribe these drops off-label, usually at bedtime, to help slow progression. Your child can continue wearing glasses during the day. We’ll explain how to use the drops and what to watch for, including light sensitivity.
At follow-up visits, we compare your child’s prescription with earlier measurements and ask how treatment fits into daily life. If their vision continues to change or the routine is difficult to maintain, we can adjust the plan.
